Contract Imports

What it is
You can now import existing, active contracts from external systems into HubSpot's Contracts tool using the standard import tool, then manage them with the same renewal, change, and reporting workflows as contracts created in HubSpot going forward.
Why it matters
The Contracts object was only useful for contracts born in HubSpot. Anyone with live agreements managed elsewhere had no migration path, which meant managing contracts across multiple systems or hacking them in. Now you can bring your active book of contracts into one place and manage renewals and changes where the rest of your customer data already lives.
The Take
Rylee Powell
We had to literally create a script to import contracts as attachments. That was such a nightmare.
This is great, and it is three months too late for a place I was just working, where we had to literally create a script to import contracts as attachments. That was such a nightmare, and now contracts are their own real object you can import into. I am evaluating contracts right now for a client where we have been using subscriptions, and this update is part of what makes that move plausible.
Here is the honest comparison. The way most of us have done renewals historically is deals: close date sets a renewal date on the company, a workflow spins up a renewal deal 180 days out, maybe a dedicated renewal pipeline. It works, and it is clunky. Subscriptions are built for set-it-and-forget-it recurring billing, and they are rigid for anything else. I once fixed a typo in a subscription description and HubSpot wanted to email my client about the change. For nuanced B2B agreements, contracts look like the right home, with renewals and changes modeled on the object instead of faked with deals.
The catch is the tier gate. Contracts live in Revenue Hub, and if your client is not on it, the migration path costs a hub purchase. For some teams the deals workaround will keep winning on price alone. Watch that math before you fall in love with the object.

FAQ
What do I need?
Revenue Hub Professional or Enterprise, and the feature is in public beta. If you are not on Revenue Hub, contracts are not available and the deal-pipeline renewal pattern remains the workaround.
Contracts or subscriptions?
Subscriptions fit simple recurring set-and-forget billing. Contracts fit nuanced B2B agreements where renewals, changes, and reporting matter. This import unlocks migrating the latter into HubSpot.
How do I import them?
Through HubSpot's standard import tool, the same flow you use for contacts, companies, and deals.
