Convert a text property to a dropdown property
Friday, August 21, 2026
What it is
Allows single- or multi-line text properties to be converted into dropdown select properties without losing existing data. As of 21 August 2026 this beta is temporarily rolled back; already-converted properties continue to work as dropdowns.
Why it matters
Previously, properties with existing values couldn't be switched to dropdowns; this lets teams standardize fields as their data model evolves.
The Take
Chris Carolan
Most people looked at that, decided it was not worth it, and left the field as text forever.
The old path was madness, and everyone who has done it knows it. You had a single line text field with data in it and you wanted a dropdown, so you built a proxy field, moved all the data across, emptied the original, then re-imported from the temporary field. Four steps and a held breath. Most people looked at that, decided it was not worth it, and left the field as text forever.
What is actually interesting here is not the feature, it is where the AI shows up. Everyone looks at Breeze and agents when they think about AI in HubSpot. The quiet version is in the backend: reading a column, inferring that it looks like a dropdown and probably carries these options, and transforming the data on the way across. That used to be a real engineering lift, which is why this never existed.
If you have been carrying a text field you always meant to standardize, this is the beta to watch. Just know it is private beta, so plan around it rather than on it.
Update, 21 August 2026: HubSpot has temporarily rolled this beta back to make adjustments before trying again with a version adapted to recent feedback. Accounts return to the previous experience and no action is required; anything already converted keeps working as a dropdown. Our read on air: they do not pull a beta this way unless it broke something real for somebody. Converting text to a dropdown rewrites how every historical value is stored, so reporting or an audit trail is the likely casualty. The consolation is the speed of the response, and there is a stated path forward. To get into the next round it is an email to the beta owner or a note to your CSM.
