Cross-Object Filtering Quantifier Controls
Thursday, September 3, 2026
What it is
When you filter records using a cross-object condition, for example Companies where a deal property matches a value, you can now explicitly choose whether the filter should match records where any associated object meets the condition, or where all associated objects meet it.
Why it matters
When a filter crosses a one-to-many association boundary (for example, a company with multiple deals), HubSpot previously applied "any" logic silently, with no way to express a different intent. If you actually needed all associated records to match, your filter returned incorrect results with no indication why. Now the choice is visible and deliberate.
The Take
Chris Carolan
Associations are hard, even though I love them. Unless you understand your data model very cleanly.
Any versus all is a step in the right direction, and the silent part is what makes it matter. A filter that quietly assumed any, with no way to say you meant all, returned wrong results and gave you no signal that it had. Now the choice is visible and deliberate.
What is still missing is selecting by label, or by primary. And primary is genuinely awkward outside companies, where it was built in: once you are working with three associations that are all equally important and named different things, a primary designation stops describing anything real. Building around it has always been a struggle. Selecting a specific label is probably the next step.
There is a use case for this in almost every portal, and it gets confusing because the options change as you move through the product: primary, a specific label, most recently associated, all associated, depending on where you are standing. The filtering work HubSpot has been doing is starting to centralize that.
The catch is on our side. If you hit that wall years ago and built your way around it with extra properties and record IDs scattered across records so you could find things, that workaround is working and it is not trivial to unwind. But cross-object filtering on index pages is built on association labels, so that is the part of the platform to start using properly.
