What it is

A public API for managing CRM pipeline rules, covering editing restrictions by stage, stage creation, backwards movement, stage skipping, and deal approval requirements.

Why it matters

Teams can now manage pipeline rules directly through their own external tools and integrations, extending HubSpot's pipelines API.

The Take

Chris Carolan

Guardrails should protect the human on either side of the deal, not just make the report work.
Chris Carolan

This is the one that could go either way, and that is the honest read. A public API now lets you manage pipeline rules: editing restrictions by stage, stage creation, backwards movement, stage skipping, and deal approval requirements. For the growing crowd running HubSpot from outside HubSpot, that is real reach. The worry is what happens when the rules bend the wrong way, forcing a contact backward through stages it never took so a report looks right, and making the data lie about the human on either end.

Guardrails exist to keep people from doing the wrong thing at the wrong time. Extending them to an API means your integrations can respect the same rules your team does, or quietly break them, depending on who holds the keys. Set them with the human in mind, not just the reporting.
