What it is

A minor visual update to our empty states to better represent the type of report that was meant to display.

Why it matters

We're updating our empty states to be more modern and informative.

The Take

Chris Carolan

If it is empty and you say, there's no data to show in this timeframe, that was the plan, but now I'm worried that something else is wrong.

It is a small, small update, and I would still flag it, because of a question I ask all the time: is it even set up right? The before screenshots read “There is no data to show in this time frame. Try changing the date range.” The after keeps the same message at the bottom, but at least we now know we are supposed to be looking for a table, or a pie chart. That is the first clue into what a report was meant to show.

The one that stopped me was the open deals not contacted recently report. The after image adds the line “Identify which open deals may need follow-up to keep them moving forward. Keep this list empty by following up,” and “You have no data right now.” I was not thinking of this: here is the queue, and you actually want it to be empty. If it is empty and the report says there is no data to show in this timeframe, that was the plan, but now I am worried that something else is wrong. This is a step in the right direction. Ryan's guess was that the extra text is a template, templated out of the box. That is a guess; the panel does not say.

I wondered out loud whether empty state is something we can configure in reports. Ryan said he would need to check, and neither of us knew, so I am not claiming it either way. Per the panel this is purely visual and empty states continue to function as normal, so there is nothing to set up. If you build reports meant to sit empty, watch for the new copy, and do not read it as a new setting. We pointed to Wednesday's Office Hours on reporting and dashboards, 11 AM Central, as the place to ask. Otherwise you can skip this one.

FAQ

Does this change how my reports work?

No. Per the panel, this is just a visual change, and empty states will continue to function as normal.

Who gets it?

All hubs and tiers. The board shows it as Live.

Can I configure what an empty state says?

Not answered. The question was raised on air and left open ("I'll need to check, not sure"), and the panel does not say, so check your own portal before you plan around it.
