Set Maximum Marketing Contact Limits
Friday, August 14, 2026
What it is
Super admins and users with Modify Billing permission will be able to set a maximum marketing contact limit on the Marketing Contacts page. Once the limit is reached, imports and automation stop marking contacts as marketing. In development, with a forward-looking date of at least August 14, 2026.
Why it matters
It gives admins a hard ceiling against unexpected tier auto-upgrades and surprise charges, replacing a warning-based system that only helps if someone is watching at the right moment.
The Take
Casey Hawkins + Chris Carolan
Somebody somewhere was like, hey, we can throttle credits. Why aren't we throttling marketing contacts for surprise overages?
This was the release of the day, and it closes a gap that has cost real money. Warnings as you approach your limit are fine right up until something moves faster than a person can react to it. The scenario is familiar to anyone who has run this at scale: a lead form on an ad account connected to HubSpot, leads intended for another system but generating in HubSpot anyway, a slow climb through the high seventies, and then a broad nationally targeted campaign launches and thirty thousand marketing contacts arrive at once. The invoice follows.
The tell is that HubSpot already knew how to do this. Credits can be throttled. The question was always why marketing contacts could not be, and the answer was probably that the overage was a revenue line somebody was reluctant to give up. Read alongside reporting coming down to Starter, this looks less like a one-off fix and more like the old ways of charging for HubSpot changing in front of us. Contact-count pricing made sense when a marketing email was the main way you reached a person. It makes less sense now that it is one channel among many.
What to do: act on this the week it ships. If you have ever been surprised by a marketing contact count, set the ceiling before you need it. Note the status is in development with a date of at least August 14 and no promises attached, so plan around it rather than on it.
