Update Payment Method (Dunning) Links Available for Subscriptions

What it is

You can copy a buyer-facing "Update payment method" link for any subscription that was not generated from a contract. Before, the link only appeared after a payment failed. Now it is available whatever the payment status. Live as of October 20, 2026, for all hubs and tiers.

Why it matters

Per HubSpot, failed payments are one of the most common causes of involuntary churn, and most of them are avoidable. With the link always available you can send it before a card expires or when a buyer switches cards, resolve the request in one step without collecting card details yourself, and protect recurring revenue with fewer failed charges and less retry and recovery work. Expiry-reminder workflows need Professional or above.

The Take

Chris Carolan

I'm interested in this being a solution to proactively catch it on the first try or catch it before.
— Chris Carolan

I think the only reason I know what the word dunning means is from taking over Hubsessed. I set up my agent team to monitor Beehiiv and Stripe all day, and it would catch failed payments and tell me the dunning link was still out. I did not know it was a special kind of link. It was just the link the subscriber uses to update their payment, and you had to let the process work: retry three times, and only after the third failure could you start to address it.

This update is the proactive version. The buyer-facing update payment method link is now available for any subscription that was not generated from a contract, whatever the payment status, so you can catch it on the first try, or before it fails at all. That is the intent, and it is the right one. What it also shows is how many permissioning gates sit around a simple thing. Should it be that hard to grab an update payment method link whenever you want to let a customer know? This reads like HubSpot taking another step toward a full-fledged e-commerce and online commerce management system. Thank you, Revenue Hub team.

Who should act: anyone billing subscriptions through HubSpot payments, starting with whoever handles the failed-payment emails today, and pair the link with an expiry-reminder workflow if you are on Professional or above. Who can skip it: portals with no HubSpot-billed subscriptions.
