Copy Associations via Workflows

What it is
A "Copy associations" workflow action that creates associations between two records based on a shared intermediary record. A company associated to both a deal and a contact can bridge those two.
Why it matters
Previously workflows could only associate records sharing a matching property value. Leveraging existing relationships removes manual effort and custom builds, producing more complete CRM data for segmentation, attribution, and reporting.
The Take
Chris Carolan
This is one of those handle with great care workflows, though.
This is a workflow action that bridges two records through a record they are both already connected to. Say a company is associated with both a deal and a contact, but the deal and the contact were never directly linked. The workflow now reads the company's existing associations and connects the deal to the contact automatically, in one action. Before this, that kind of bridging required workflows built around matching property values, or in my case, a manual setup using four separate fields and at least two workflows to fake the same result.
I heard about this directly from Maggie, one of the HubSpot product managers, and my first reaction was relief mixed with real cleanup work. I now have workflows to retire that were solving exactly this gap by hand. There is also a live use case I am watching: a client with a renewal process built on a project object, where dozens of contacts carry specific association labels tied to their role. Whether this update actually carries those labels through when the renewal project gets recreated each year is not confirmed. I think it might. I have not tested it.
The clearest warning from the show is that this is a handle-with-great-care feature. HubSpot's own example calls out the risk directly: get the logic wrong and you can associate a deal to a bunch of contacts that have no business being connected to it. If you have been solving this exact bridging problem by hand with extra fields and workflows, this is worth testing this week, one workflow at a time. Test it on a narrow case before you let it run against real data at scale. It is currently Private Beta, so access is not universal yet.
